merchandise – especially when it comes to LEDs. He goes on to say, “Many lighting

companies – especially

LED‐only companies – will try and sell the products they have, rather than seek out options best suited to the individual retailer.”

He adds: “It can be better to use an independent lighting supplier that has no bias towards a particular manufacturer or technology.”

More than 70 substandard or even illegal LED based products have been withdrawn from sale in the last four years. These products have been removed as many of them are substandard imports and range from LED bulbs to complete lighting solutions. They were removed by the European Commission as a precautionary measure to protect buyers from potential risks including fire, burns and electric shocks.

Osram is committed to helping firms invest in safe and secure LED lighting products that are suitable for their needs, budgets and energy efficient requirements. “LED lighting products have transformed the lighting industry. Genuine, high‐quality LED products are up to 90 per cent more energy‐efficient and offer lower total cost of ownership,” says Jason Ford, UK Controls manager at Osram. “However, it can be difficult for customers to know if the

product they are buying is everything it claims to be, and the EC list of substandard solutions makes for worrying reading. While the law helps to protect customers from hazardous products, lighting users should also be vigilant towards cheap LEDs as many give poor performance in terms of brightness and lifespan. Although these are within legal safety limits, they still constitute the risk of wasted investment. We have therefore developed guidance that we hope will help customers to navigate their way through the market and find a solution they can rely on; one that is backed by years of research and development and exhaustive safety testing.” Ford concludes. Osram offers some advice to retailers looking to choose a new lighting system including buying from a reputable brand and seller, check the IP rating for products and choose products with a guaranteed lifespan.

Much of this may seem common sense but when it comes to a large outlay such as a new lighting system, retailers can sometimes get blinded by cost or short delivery or installation times. When choosing a new system retailers need to not only look at the aesthetics of the design and the purpose of the lighting but also how

long the system will last, how much it will be to run and work out the return on investment over the years.
