KRIS SMITH AND JUSTIN GUMM AGE: Kris 43, Justin 36 ARRIVED: 2010 THE JOB: Pizza Pushers, Slackwater Pizzeria and Pub, Ogden
For Kris Smith and Justin Gumm, Ogden represents the best of all worlds: close proximity to three incredible ski resorts, an extensive foothill trail system, amicable business climate and affordable cost of living. Their path to the Wasatch Front’s northernmost metro area, however, was anything but direct. Smith and Gumm fi rst met over a decade ago at Grand Targhee Resort. “I’d moved there nine years before Justin did for the snow,” Smith says. After
dating awhile the couple decided to head north to the Cascades. There they skied Mount Baker during the day and slung cocktails at the Nooksack River Casino at night. Before long wanderlust struck again, taking the couple to Girdwood, Alaska. But limited professional opportunities and soggy summers ultimately made them look around once again. “I’d made a couple of trips to Ogden and really liked what I saw going on there,” Gumm says. So, in 2011
Smith and Gumm purchased Peloton’s Café & Bakery, located along Ogden’s River Parkway, and reopened it as Slackwa- ter Pub & Pizzeria. Ogden’s hip, out- doors-minded populace quickly embraced Slackwater’s artisan pizza, 140-plus beer menu and live music. Gumm keeps a rod behind the bar so he can throw a line in the nearby river at least twice a day while Smith logs 30-plus days on the mountain each winter.
