Stock their pockets with tissues, sunscreen, lip balm, hand warmers and snacks! Hard candies or Starbursts are great thirst quenchers and easy to carry. A granola bar will tide tots over until cocoa break, making the day run smoothly. Make it fun. Go at your kids’ pace, not yours. If they want to stop and make snow angels every five minutes, so be it. Sing songs on the chairlift. Bestow a piece of licorice each time your child spots wildlife (an ermine skittering across the slope, a porcupine in the trees).

OING SKIING AS A FAMILY sets the foundation for a lifetime of appreciating the outdoors and each other; and the happy rewards of rosy cheeks, tired muscles and hot chocolate in front of a toasty fire after a day of healthy exercise in the mountains make it all worthwhile. Probably more important than ever in our video-game era, there’s no better time to lay that foundation for your family. It doesn’t get easier than in Utah. With the state’s commitment to family-style fun, and it’s incredibly easy access (11 resorts less than an hour’s drive of the airport), there’s not even time for the kids to get cranky in the car.
Go To Their Happy Place
The best way to keep the kids engaged on the hill is to make sure they’re comfortable and having fun. Area ski school professionals recommend the following: Gear must-haves include gaiter, helmet and sunglasses or goggles (at Utah resorts’ altitudes, sun damage would be an issue without).
Custom Fit Find the little off-the-beaten-path gems that will make your winter vacation uniquely special for the family. Like spying on the sleeping bear in Quincy’s Cabin or admiring the hand-carved animals in the homes along Last Chance run at Deer Valley (which has a special kids-only trail map). Or find the Snowbug sculptures scattered around the mountain at PCMR, marking its Adventure Alleys. Take a children’s art class in beading, pottery or printmaking at the Art Shack at Sundance (they also have a special kids’ (9–15) treatment menu at their spa). Change the pace up a bit and cross-country ski at Solitude’s Nordic Center before a delicious dinner in their Yurt. At Brighton, kids seven and under ski and ride free. Just sayin’.
Get Schooled
An array of lesson types are available at resorts for children as young as four or five, and most resorts offer childcare for kids as young as two. Snowbird offers daycare for babes as young as six weeks and in-room babysitting! Many of the resorts offer guaranteed small-size classes for kids (such as PCMR’s Signature Three lessons: three kids or fewer for ages three and a half to five). Many Utah resorts offer special clinics and classes for teens 15 to 17 as well. It’s a great way to meet local ski buddies, who can probably show your teen where to find the secret powder stashes.
