NATHAN POWERS AGE: 43 ARRIVED: 2007 THE JOB: Top Chef, Bambara in the Hotel Monaco, Salt Lake City


If you’re familiar at all with Utah’s fl ourishing restaurant scene, then you’ve heard of Nathan Powers, the culinary savant behind one of downtown Salt Lake City’s most beloved high-end eateries, Bambara. Powers’ resume includes stints at San Francisco’s Stars (widely touted as the birthplace of California cuisine), Hawthorne Lane (now called TWO) and Farallon. Then, says Powers, his “inner ski bum” kicked in and he took off for a


year of skiing while cooking at Moody’s Bistro at Lake Tahoe. Powers eventually returned to San Francisco where he joined the Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants group. While consulting at a Kimpton property in Boston, Powers met his wife whose family owned a second home in Park City. “I visited Park City and immediately knew it was where I wanted to be,” he says. The couple married at Sundance Mountain Re- sort, his wife opened Range Pilates Studio


in Park City and Powers took the helm at Bambara. He now gets to enjoy a work-life balance rare in the culinary industry. “I live in a small town in the mountains where I ski every weekend and nobody locks their doors but get the professional satisfaction of working in a city,” Powers says. He has a great thing going, balancing the work hard, play hard attitude. And he promises that his downtown bistro will continue to dish up inspired cuisine, even on powder days.
