EDITOR’S LETTER
Powder to Parenthood
Over a decade ago I moved to Utah for what I planned to be “just one” winter. Fresh out of college, I drove up Highway 210 into Little Cottonwood Canyon, where I lucked into a job as a liftie. Utah’s reputation for its legendary snow drew me to the Wasatch Mountains, the western edge of the Rocky Mountains, teetering on desert’s edge. I showed up for work the day before Thanksgiving and was puzzled to find the mountains as dry as the nearby desert. And then the skies opened up. On Thanksgiving Day, and in the three days that followed, fall magnificently transformed into winter. That winter of 2001 is still talked about today—punctuated by the 100 inches of snow that fell in 100 hours. I was awestruck, astonished. It suffices to say I had never seen anything like it before.
It would be easy to assume that snow is the reason that I still live, work and play in Utah’s mountains. But playing in the snow these days means something so much different to me now. I’ve traded in the first tracks and the steep lines for the bunny slopes where you'll find me with my three-year-old daughter, Grace. As this new chapter in my Utah life unfolds, never before have I been so satisfied to spend time in the mountains, on the snow, witnessing huge smiles flash across my daughter’s face as she experiences her introduction to our mountains. Though I must confess that there are still plenty of chairlift rides where my pockets aren’t stuffed with Skittles for Grace and conversations aren't dominated by where we might spot our next porcupine. Because, after all, there’s still plenty of deep pow to ski, right?
This is the year to discover your Utah story. This is the year to plan that ski trip to Utah, to chase powder, to help your child perfect that pizza turn. In the following pages, you will find a resort guide that is not only stuffed with incredible ski and snowboard imagery but also planning information that will help the powderhounds as well as the family with young kids find a Utah ski vacation fit for you. Who knows? Maybe your “just one” will turn into a lifetime, too.
Sincerely
Brandon Ott, Editor
