ITH THE waste industry poised for the opening of Europe’s premier waste management event, RWW brings you a snapshot of what’s in store at RWM

2013 in association with CIWM. Featuring more than 750 exhibitors and

the largest free CPD-accredited conference programme in its history, RWM 2013 in partnership with CIWM (supported by the Environmental Services Association) returns to the NEC from 10 to 12 September.

The conference This year sees the secretary of state for energy and climate change, Edward Davey, take to the stage. Speaking in the energy from waste theatre (sponsored by Advanced Plasma Power, Switzerland Trade and Investment Promotion and Osborne Clarke), Davey will cover areas including the UK’s energy needs, the role of energy from waste and how this will support security of supply. At the heart of RWM’s conference

programme is the leaders arena (sponsored by Dentons), which is the destination for visitors wanting to hear leading CEOs share their vision on the future of waste and resource and how they create new policy. It’s the perfect opportunity to shake hands with senior waste experts and discuss the big issues. Offering a rare opportunity to see six

of the leading CEOs, the panel discussion ‘Addressing the major industry challenges’ shouldn’t be missed by those wishing to gain cutting-edge, top level insight into the big questions in waste. Joining David Palmer-Jones, chief executive of SITA, are Ian Wakelin, CEO at Biffa, Peter Greenhalgh, CEO at M&W Group, Richard Skehens, chief executive at Grundons, Liz Goodwin, CEO at WRAP and Stephen Shergold, partner at Dentons Energy Practice. From a private sector perspective in the

commerce and industry theatre, Forbes McDougall, Global Wastestream’s owner and product supply waste team leader at Proctor & Gamble, will look at zero waste ambitions and new revenue opportunities.

4 September 5 2013 He will report on how Proctor & Gamble is

dealing with diverse waste streams to avoid landfill and generate income. Many other motivational speakers will be

appearing across the conference including Lord Robert Winston, who will give an inspirational talk on how we humans are motivated to improve the world around us. Eco-adventurer Andy Pag drove around the world in an old school bus powered by used cooking oil. Ethical living newspaper journalist, Lucy Siegle, will explore how to get householders to recycle and Professor Dieter Helm, independent chair at Defra Natural Capital Committee, will look at where current legislation is leading us, and how we can do the best for the environment and the economy.

Communications at the forefront Good stories will take centre stage at the communications hub, delivered by Copper Consultancy in partnership with SLR Consulting and APSRG (Associate Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group), offering a detailed look at ‘positive communications’ with three days of free thought-provoking sessions at RWM 2013 in partnership with CIWM. Using good news stories and innovative

practices within the industry as a springboard for discussion, each day of the communications hub will be organised around a specific theme. With everything from a perfect pitching session to in-depth panel debates, the communications hub will host policy makers, key sector speakers and industry leaders in delivering a dynamic and progressive programme. These four theatres are also supported by

the local authority theatre (sponsored by Kier, AmeyCespa and SKMEnviros) and supported by LARAC.

Key exhibitors Exhibitors returning to RWM in association with CIWM in 2013 include industry leading reprocessing and vehicle manufacturers such as Dennis Eagle, Faun Zoeller and NTM, some of Europe’s largest refuse collection vehicle (RCV) manufacturers, along with Geesink Norba, Europe’s largest provider of RCVs and waste compactors. One of Europe’s fastest growing RCV and

tanker producers, Farid Heil, will also be exhibiting, as well as Mercedes and Izusu,

the truck manufacturers, JCB construction machinery, and Norbert Dentressangle, the freight and logistics specialist. With energy from waste being a strong

focus at this year’s show, a range of new solutions will be unveiled by exhibitors, and key issues will be discussed in the energy from waste dedicated theatre. Enhancing the well-established gasification

process through the use of the plasma torch technology, CHO-Power converts residual waste and biomass into energy. Whether attendees are interested in RCVs,

fleet hire, street cleansing, vehicle telematics/ weighing or monitoring, there are plenty of exhibitors demonstrating the latest solutions to improve waste services. Scarab Sweepers is a global frontrunner in

the manufacturing and supply of compact and truck-mounted road sweepers and suppliers of street cleansing vehicles, while Optimised Waste Logistics (OWL) is a unique partnership of companies working together to deliver a fully integrated waste collection solution driven by customer demand. Looking at recycling specifically, be sure to

seek out J&A, the UK’s largest plastic recycler, as well as Saica Natur who offer recycling services for large scale waste producers in distribution, retail and food manufacturing. Also exhibiting, Aylesford Newsprint

manufacture around 400,000 tonnes of 100% recycled Renaissance Standard Newsprint and Renaissance Brite Improved News and Renaissance Smooth every year. Visitors can also check out the latest waste

machinery. The aptly named BigBelly Solar compactor bins have a compaction capability that can hold six to eight times more waste than the average street bin. Contenur also offers one of the widest range

of waste containers, wheelie bins, litter bins, street furniture and services on the market.

Show features Key themes and features return to the show this year, such as the professional services clinic, which will offer free personalised advice from the professionals and could save visitors thousands on consulting fees, while the materials village focuses on recycling and reprocessing a wide range of waste streams from collection and sort to end markets for recovered materials. The event organisers have also developed several ‘trails’ to help people

with targeted agendas make the most of their visit, including the energy from waste trail, the new exhibitor trail, the working exhibit trail, which highlights the exhibitors with working machinery and product demonstrations on their stand along with the innovation trail, which will focus on new technologies. With networking high on the agenda, RWM

in partnership with CIWM visitors will benefit from 60 plus hours of face-to-face meetings, social events, matchmaking sessions, official functions, debates and informal get-togethers at the show. Working hand-in-hand with the networking

events is the event’s newly launched website, which provides detailed information on all exhibitors, the conference programme, show features, tours and trails; it’s the perfect resource for visitors as they start planning their visit to the show. New for 2013 is the skills village,

in association with WAMITAB (Waste Management Industry Training & Advisory Board) which will showcase all aspects of skills, training and career opportunities in waste and resource management. It will provide access to introductory

courses for those looking to enter the industry through to bespoke training and professional development opportunities. The social enterprise zone is designed to

recognise the valuable role of the third sector in waste management. Organisations that will be on hand to offer advice include Scrapstores UK, the Community Resource Network, REalliance, Rehab Recycle and the Furniture Re-use Network. With many professionals embracing a

wider sustainability remit in their role, RWM in partnership with CIWM 2013 is co-located with three complementary events this year; The Energy Event, The Renewables Event and The (new) Water Event, which can be accessed for free by all visitors to RWM in partnership with CIWM 2013.
