C/LStunt PHOTOGRAPHY: ALLEN BRICKHAUS
Matt Colan digs out some trimming time (above) with his new Thunder Gazerand PA .61 with pipe at the Brodak Fly-In. This kit and engine were donated by two different individuals at the 2012 Nationals last year, and Matt has combined the two gifts for an effective Stunt plane for the 2013 season and beyond. Samantha Hines and family are a blast to be with anywhere you find them. Samantha placed fourth in a strong group of adults and later won the Junior/Senior Beginner Stunt event at the Nats in Muncie in July. Here (at right) she holds an Intimidator Combat type model which she flies in Profile Stunt, powered by a .35 powerplant.
T
he seventeenth running of the Brodak Fly-In went well this year. Ken Armish filled in as CD for the retired Tom Hampshire. I have nothing but admiration for the work that Tom and Ken have accomplished to help the 2013 version flow smoothly from its start to its conclusion on the Saturday before Fa- ther’s Day. My hearty thanks to both Tom and Ken. The event began as usual with a flurry of activity in the four classes of Profile Stunt. 53 pilots vied for the awards in Be- ginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Ex- pert. Racing capped off Tuesday evening. A note to friends of John Brodak: he is now working on the completion of 29 radia- tion treatments for cancer of the throat. He is taking this quite in stride, and to this date, he is halfway through the process as I write this in late July. Do keep him and his wife, Buzz, in your thoughts and prayers. His intentions are to complete 20 Fly-Ins and has three more to achieve his goal. Whether we go past 20 is dependent upon John’s health and his motivation after that. There is a lot to do to bring that many con-
trol line modelers to his backyard each year. This is my 14th year as the co-CD of the Fly- In, and I have expressed my desire to contin- ue to year 20. Come and enjoy southwest Pennsylvania next summer and have a great time at the next Brodak Fly-In. The Brodak Fly-In encapsulates a multiple number of events and a list of these can be found on
www.brodak.com. At the same time, you can see the listings of events, dates, and times for the 2014 event. Winners are also listed under the 2013 results to check out how each flyer
did. There are no rules
changes, and the current rules will be posted on line by the first of October. The flyer is ac- tually almost ready to print, and we are at- tempting to get fully in front of the power curve for 2014. This year, we moved the Junk Yard Wars to one day due to rain and found out that the competitors liked the new sched- ule. We are keeping that for next year. 77 C.L.P.A. pilots flew under nice weather conditions on Friday and Saturday to com- plete the end of the event. The website will also give you placements for all the Junk Yard Wars, Basic Flight racing, Carrier,
Combat, and Scale. The judges are also list- ed, and we cannot thank all the workers, judges, tabulators, runners, food servers, demo staff, appearance points men, and plaque assemblers enough for a great week in Carmichael, Pennsylvania.
One of the pictures this month is of Bob Hudak’s F-105 Thunderchief. I asked Bob Hunt, the designer of this model, to provide some background information on the Thun- derchief. Here is Bob’s reply: “I designed and built the Thunderchief over the winter of 1970/1971. I flew it at the 1972 KOI and it was published in the May, 1973 issue of FLYING MODELS. It had an OS Max H40S engine in it. When I first flew it without the drop tanks attached it was a dog. I almost sold it right then. I decided to fly it once with the drop tanks on just for the experience of seeing it in the air that way, and, ‘Bazzinga’, it flew great. From that point on I only flew it with the tanks on. With that ship I beat Bill Simons for the first time at a contest! That was in 1971. The ship is Nostalgia legal, but it most certainly not Classic legal.”

Steve Bitner of the Baltimore, Maryland area brought Hank Spielman’s Spielman Special (above left) to the Brodak event. Allen met Steve some 14 years ago, and they are working, along with Joe Peters, to publish this model, which is pulled through the air by a Johnson .35. Dan Banjock, Len Bourel, and

Al Ferraro take to the racing circle (above right) to vie for the Foxberg championship at the Brodak Fly-In. Al and his pit man, Carl Schaefer, won the Expert class with a 14:11:52, with Dan Banjock and Mike Palko at a 14:12:63, plus Len and Brad LaPointe with 163 laps. Thanks to Bob Whitney for this info.
