busied herself with her GoPro camera, mounting it on various parts of the loco- motive and its trailing caboose (click on the video link to see the results). In be- tween runs, freights paraded constant- ly past the museum’s ex-New York Cen- tral station with CSX trains on the ex-NYC and Norfolk Southern running just a few yards away on the ex-Nickel Plate Road main line. As darkness settled in, I set up three Alien Bees strobe units for a well-at- tended night photo session. One scene featured two 0-4-0 locomotives wearing the number 6, with Viscose 6 posing next to the museum’s Heisler fireless cooker. Other scenes included the mu- seum’s former New York Central GE U25B (both with and without Viscose 6) and ex-Chicago, South Shore & South Bend “Little Joe” electric No. 802. The next morning we were up early to meet our gracious Cedar Point media host, Carly Shenigo. We headed direct- ly to the shop of the Cedar Point & Lake Erie to get the GoPro camera mounted to CP&LE 2-4-0 No. 44, Judy K. (Vul- can 1923), which took only a matter of a few minutes thanks to a new magnetic mount Emily had for the camera. With the camera in place and time to kill un- til the first run, we headed over to Mil- lennium Force (ranked as one of the top two coasters in the world every year since it was built in 2000) where Carly got us on the front seats for the spectac- ular 300-foot first drop.
After repositioning the camera for a
few more runs, we headed for Top Thrill Dragster, a coaster I had not been on before. It hits a top speed of 120 m.p.h. in less than four seconds and has a drop of 420 feet. Once again, a front seat ride was in order. After hitting one more coaster (Raptor) we said goodbye to Carly and spent another few hours shooting Judy K. and CP&LE 2-4-0 No. 22 Myron H. before reluctantly leaving
OPPOSITE: Cedar Point & Lake Erie 2-4-0 No. 44, Judy K., pauses for water at the Funway Station at the famous Ohio amusement park. The water tank is no longer used; all Cedar Point steamers take on water through a siphon hose.
