A COOL WEEKEND away from the northeast’s humidity is just what the doctor ordered for the Railfan Weekend held on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad on August 2-4, 2013. The up- state New York mountains, while only a cou- ple of hours from sweltering New York City, provide a respite for the weary railfan. This year’s railfan event was co-spon- sored by the Alco Historical Society, and there were some fine Alcos on display. The event kicked off on Friday night at the ex- New York Central station at Thendara with a three-locomotive line-up that included ex- NYC RS3

cluding the regular Adirondack Scenic train from Utica to Thendara behind a pair of

MLW RS18s (below, southbound at Mc- Keever), the lunch train from Thendara north to Big Moose, shorter trips south to Otter Lake and frequent caboose hops. Saturday night was a night photo session

at the Big Moose station; the line had not been opened this far north a year ago when the 2012 railfan weekend was held. A small freight train had been assembled for the night session and three stops were planned along the route; alas, rain moved in during the first shot at the Big Moose station (above), shortening the evening. All in all, the railfan weekend was a success. The railroad offered a very attractive package price of only $99 that included both night sessions, the train from Utica either day,ei- ther the Saturday lunch train or Sunday brunch train to Big Moose (including food) and all the trains out of Thendara. —S.B.
