SECOND DINNER TRAIN DEBUTS: On August 14, R.J. Corman kicked off its new Lexington Dinner Train, running 15 miles over a former Louisville Southern (Louisville & Nashville) branch between Lexington and Versailles, Ky. Lunch and dinner trains will operate Wednesdays through Sat- urdays through September. Corman continues to operate My Old Kentucky Dinner Train out of Bardstown.

Santa Fe 2926

GROUP SEES COMPLETION DATE: The New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society says it hopes to complete the restoration of its Santa Fe 4-8-4 No. 2926 in Albuquerque by June 2015. After that, the 1944 Baldwin will be put through a year of shakedown runs to fine-tune its operation and confirm its reliability. The locomotive has been invited to participate in a special com- memorative excursion in the summer of 2016, provided that the engine is ready. The details of the trip have not been formalized yet, so no official announcement is being made. In the meantime, the society plans to put the locomo- tive and tender on static display at National Train Day in May 2014. The group estimates it will cost another $170,000 to complete the restoration, “which doesn’t include filling the 7000 gallon tender with oil.” The lion’s share of the cost is the re- maining pressure vessel welding, which in- cludes 520 flexible staybolt sleeve welds, 880 superheater pipe welds, and 272 flue and tube seal welds. To complete this work by June 2015, hired welders will need to be hired in addition to the group’s in-house welders. NMSL&RHS says that if everyone who’s in- terested in the seeing No. 2926 run would join the group for the sum of $29.26, enough funds would be raised to finish the job.

TransCanada Pipeline

PIPE MAY SUPPLANT UNIT TRAINS: TransCanada Corp. says it plans to complete its 2700-mile long Energy East Pipeline from Alberta and Saskatchewan to terminals in Québec City, Québec, and Saint John, New Brunswick, by 2018. The project will convert an existing 1800-mile gas pipeline to move oil and nearly 900 miles of new pipeline will be built to connected with it in Alberta, Sas- katchewan, Manitoba, eastern Ontario, Québec, and New Brunswick. Terminals in Québec City and Saint John will serve re- fineries in Montréal, Québec City (Lévis), and Saint John, and the last two will also have fa- cilities for loading tanker ships. TransCanada and Irving Oil plan to jointly own and operate a deepwater marine terminal at Canaport in Saint John. Although the project does not di- rectly tap North Dakota’s Bakken Formation, this pipeline could make the operation of unit crude oil trains to eastern Canada a short- term proposition.

A Preview of Union Pacific No. 4014 Under Steam

PHOTOGRAPHER STEVE CRISE CONDUCTED a night photography session with Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 No. 4014 and UP 4-12-2 No. 9000 on Saturday, August 17 at the RailGiants Train Museum at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona., Calif. About 35 photogra- phers participated. UP has acquired the big Alco articulated from the Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society and plans to restore it to operation in time for the 150th anniversary of the Driving of the Golden Spike in 2019. The railroad has al- ready started to prepare the locomotive for the move, which will take place some time after the Los Angeles County Fair ends in late September.

No. 4014 was not the only Big Boy in the spotlight that weekend, as on Sunday, August 18 the Museum of the American Railroad’s UP No. 4018 finally started its long-awaited move from Fair Park in Dallas, Texas, to the museum’s new location in Frisco. Sunday’s move only made it as far as South Irving, and the locomotive was delivered to Frisco on the following weekend.
