AUGUST SIGNALS THE NEAR-END of summer, but there’s one event I always look forward to around the middle of the month and that’s Summerail at Cincinnati Union Terminal. Sponsored by the Cincinnati Railroad Club and the Miami Valley Railfans, Summerail is a fun weekend of great railroad photogra- phy and catching up with old friends. This year was no different. Steve and I made the trek to the lower

Then it was off to CUT and a quick visit to Tower A, home of the Cincinnati Railroad Club. Aside from snag- ging a few bargains from their collection of used books, there are plenty of opportunities to observe the busy operations of the Queensgate Yard complex sprawled out below. ditional “talkie” slides shows. This year, we were treated to three fine shows by Mike Schafer, Dennis Nehrenz, and Tom Carver. Mike Schafer (editor of Passenger Train Journal) took us on a whirlwind tour of the old Detroit, Toledo & Ironton as well as a brief swing through Conrail’s ex-New York Central line through West Virginia. Next up Dennis took us back to the late 1970s and showed us what was left of the old Western Maryland image under Chessie System. Fi- nally, Tom Carver brought us back to a color- ful time when F-units and Alcos

Burlington Northern operations in the Pa- cific Northwest. Saturday morning, I got up early and

headed over to CUT with my friend Chris Stilson so we could check out the railroadi- ana flea market before lunch. I may have found one or two old timetables to add to my collection (for research, of course). The first Summerail program began after our break for lunch. Veteran photographer Tom Gilder- sleeve presented “The Last Great American Steam Show” which chronicled the last years of Rio Grande’s narrow gauge steam operations in the 1960s. It was a nice collec- tion of “candid” photos showing the last of the common-carrier freight operations up in the mountains. I had previously seen this show at Winterail, and enjoyed it as much the second time. This was quickly followed up by Steve Smedley’s show titled “Spencer: A Railfan’s Woodstock.” This was an enter- taining show that focused on the attendees and Norfolk Southern employees that made this epic gathering so special. A few of Steve’s favorite NS images were thrown in for good measure, adding variety to the show. After the brief intermission where I may

have bought some old timetables, we were treated to Steve Patterson’s “Trains of My Appalachian Youth,” which consisted of many images considered “lost” before they were restored by modern digital technology. The audience enjoyed a constant parade of steam, early diesel, and even electric opera- tions accompanied by toe-tapping bluegrass music. Following was “The Road to Owosso Train Festival 2009” by Jeff Mast. The ma- jority of this show followed Pere Marquette 1225’s “journey” from the end of Polar Ex- press runs through an aggressive repair cy- cle to get ready in time for the 2009 Train
