2013 Brodak Fly-In
Craig Gunter flies his electric powered Cavalier (above left) in Profile Expert. Mark Weiss (above right) was the sparkplug behind the C/L Stunt presence at the past two Joe Nall Fly-Ins. Here he is flying his electric Joe Nall Cadet to
place third in Profile Beginner. Jim Lynch flew this nicely trimmed .36-powered Volunteer (below left) in the Nostalgia class. Placing first in Old Time Expert (below right) was Dan Banjock’s .35-powered Galloping Comedian.
The overcast skies for the first few days made photography more difficult but fliers didn’t have to look into the sun. Winds were unusually light, which was mostly favorable for scale and carrier flights, but their erratic direction over adjacent trees made Stunt fly- ing a little dicey at times. It’s the usual good with the bad. One hundred and twenty-eight
fliers
signed up this year and made 598 official flights, down slightly from last year (141 and 626, respectively). They took home with
them over one hundred first, second, or third place awards, sometimes fighting poor odds (many contestants, especially in Advanced and Expert).
When one locates the drive-in theater in the southeastern part of Carmichaels (popu- lation 556) and turns east down a one and one-half lane road into John and Buzz Brodak’s home on the very edge of town, it becomes apparent very quickly that the Bro- dak backyard is like no other! The original four circles are on nearly flat land but one
has to cross a little valley (and a nicely wooded picnic area) to arrive at circles num- ber five (outer part paved, for scale and practice) and number six (takeoff area paved, for carrier and Precision Aerobatic Beginner flights).
Day one, Tuesday, June 11, was devoted to Profile Precision Aerobatics, as usual. In Beginner, first-time participant Mark Weiss earned a third place with his committee- designed Joe Nall Cadet, using electric pow- er. As an interesting side note about the
Dennis Thomas flew this .46 Pathfinder (above) in the Profile Intermediate class. Even in low light, it is hard to miss this trim scheme. Eric Keller and Ken Towers battle it out with their racers (at right). Eric placed 2nd along with his pitman, Dennis Thomas.
