I read with regret Joe DeMarco’s letter re- garding his closing up shop after 1487 sets of plan drawings for just about every major model magazine published in this country. As a former art editor of RC Modeler mag- azine, an artist, and draftsman of a few plans myself (FLYING MODELS, December 2010), I cannot imagine the achievement in hand- drafting that many plans. It is truly astound- ing! We all have possibly sketched pencil plans for our projects, but try to do those same projects in ink and lettering to very precise standards over a span of 38 years! My files are full of Mr. DeMarco’s plans

and I am sure many in our hobby appreciate his premier contribution over these many years. I agree with Mr. Fanelli that Joe de- serves a plaque in the AMA Hall of Fame. Thank you, Joe, for all you have done for the vast community of modelers throughout the country.

Left Seat

Thanks for the quality and variety of sub- jects in FLYING MODELS magazine. Howev- er, I do have one minor bone to pick, (and

one which is not unique to you, as I see much the same thing in other model air- plane mags). That is for the editor’s col- umn, (in you case Left Seat), to be little more than an intro/ focus for the content of the mag’s current issue.

My sense of editorials, be they in maga- zines, newspapers, wherever, is that they are, or should be, informed “opinions” on a current issue of note. And as such should provoke thoughts/responses from readers, whether or not a reader agrees with the ed- itor’s POV. Am I totally out of it? FRANK KORMAN via e-mail

There’s plenty of validity to your case for a well-informed point of view. But it shouldn’t be used to simply provoke a response. There needs to be a purpose.

It was something I did consider when I be-

gan Left Seat, but decided in favor of the cur- rent “flavor” because of this magazine’s real purpose: relaxation and enjoyment. Besides it offers the chance to let readers meet the authors a little.

That doesn’t rule out an Op Ed piece every now and then, and I might stir the pot a little by mentioning FPV models. –Ed.
