ate imaginary worlds with their treasures from shore, says Alice, adding that the immersion in nature sparked an imagina- tion bloom in Koby and Ava Fei. While
the family faced challenges,
most came in the form of the same en- vironmental hazards that come with any canoe trip. Two-thirds of the way into the journey, on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, they faced a whole different, windy world from the relative shelter of the river corridor. “Winds, waves and miles of marshy
shoreline devoid of campsites caused me to question what we were doing,” admits Dan. Escaping the wind meant dreamy 4 a.m. paddles on a glassy Great Slave Lake as the kids slumbered in their cockpits. It’s enough to make any paddler want to quit their day job and get out on an extended trip. Dan has already booked a leave of
absence for for the clan’s next adven- ture this winter. The family is trad- ing in the canoe for bikes and will embark on an eight-month cycling trip through Chile and Argentina. By seeking adventure, Alice and Dan hope it will leave Koby and Ava Fei with the lifelong skills of know- ing when to run with the winds life blows at you and when to pull in and make camp.
