As well as the underwater tunnel, which comes straight after the first drop, additional ride elements include an over-banked horseshoe, two horizontal loops and numerous other twists and turns. Vekoma last collaborated with the folks at Fårup over 20 years ago when it installed the Mine Expressen family coaster, which races through the forest surrounding the park.

According to Dam Jensen, interest in Orkanen was strong, with all the main Danish media in attendance for the opening last month. There was also a lot of buzz on Facebook, with Fårup fans able to follow the ride’s progress during construction via updates posted by the park. Located in Blokhus, part of Denmark’s northern Jutland peninsula, Fårup Sommerland has won the title of “Scandinavia’s best summer land” for the last two years from the Swedish-based travel website Barnsemester. The park operates from late April through until September, with a bonus week for the school holidays in October.

Sub-aquatic excitement To create Orkanen, Fårup Sommerland and Vekoma used 1,200 metres of steel pipes, 100 foundations, 435m of concrete piles, 400 m2 of concrete, 3km of reinforcements, 5km of power lines, 18,000 tiles and 7,200 man- hours.

The attraction enjoys the distinction of being Scandinavia’s first rollercoaster above and below water thanks to the tunnel section after the first drop that dives beneath the park’s lake. But how difficult was this part of the ride to construct? “The lake is artificial so before we started the construction, we emptied it for water,” explains Fårup managing director Per Dam Jensen. “It took a couple of weeks, and thereafter the ground work and construction could start. The soil is marsh/moor and it meant that we had to go 14m below the ground level in order to get a good solid foundation for construction.”
