Technology: Coaxial speakers

Elton John live in Denmark with Coda Audio’s LA12 array: Coda claims that the line source integrates output from nine transducers sufficiently to perform as a single source

Dave Gunness has worked with PreSonus on its new ranges of coaxial designs

and wireless networking, and control software for Mac, Windows and iOS that enables you to manage speakers individually and in groups. That makes our coaxial systems an extremely attractive integrated solution for contractors, venue owners and other end users.” The key to this new

generation, especially in the hands of Fulcrum Acoustic, is the integration of advanced DSP algorithms. What they promise is coax performance, at high SPLs, in boxes that will have transport managers cheering at the fuel stations. Fulcrum’s AH Series is billed as large-format, with 32”x32” enclosures, with a

folded horn feeding the LF horn and a relatively large HF horn mounted coaxially. The DSP inside has come of age, and claims to do more than ever before to stabilise directionality through the crossover: very much the core of Gunness’ efforts since forming the company in 2008. “With

manipulation of the phase response, I’m able to get the beamwidth to be consistent all the way through the crossover,” as he puts it.

So the principle hasn’t changed. It’s the deployment of technology around it – some familiar, some new – that will make the difference, if a real

difference is going to be made. And if it’s not in the DSP it’s in the transducers themselves, according to Paul Ward of Anderson-Ward Consulting, responsible for the sales and international marketing of German innovator Coda Audio. “A lot of people have shied away from this because of the inherent problems,” he says, “but Coda designs its own transducers – making designs possible at the real source. Although DSP can be helpful, these problems need to be addressed at transducer level. Coda has patented advanced coaxial designs from the beginning, and the single source coaxial approach is at the heart of our philosophy.” PSNLIVE 2013
