be expected that an emphatic 80% of respondents came down on the side of proactive vs reactive when asked to sum up their R&D philosophy. Reflecting a common sentiment, one company remarked that it was “continually trying to refine and have a better understanding of [requirements] that our customers are coming up against”. Finally, manufacturers considered their greatest long- term concern with regard to the European live sound market at this time. The perception that too many regulations are inhibiting business was a repeated theme, whilst it was also clear that concerns about the impact of spectrum reform have not gone away. There were also mutterings about possible difficulties ahead in the rental

market – “it might be that some of the mid-size rental firms may go down as they have financial problems” – but the most frequently heard observation

Turbosound speakers at one of the most famous bars in Europe, Ibiza’s Cafe Del Mar

pertained to general cost constraints (“pressure upon the budget margins has been pushed so tight”).

Although these comments

reflect some trepidation about the mid-term future, they are not especially reinforced by the specific findings of this year’s manufacturers’ report. Continuing to emerge from the long shadow cast by the 2008- 2010 crisis period, order books are continuing to revive and are likely to be even in stronger in 2013. Crucially, there is also plenty of evidence that manufacturers readily acknowledge the need to carry on investing – aware, no doubt, that often expensive R&D has always been the engine of this most highly creative of industries.
