London-based Alchemea is a case in point. Short music production courses and weekend programmes on recording, mixing and mastering swell a core offer built around full-time diploma- level audio engineering courses in studio sound, audio post and more. Further enhancing its credentials, Alchemea recently announced a collaboration with Britannia Row Productions Training (BRPT) that sees the latter provide training for all students currently enrolled on Alchemea’s full-time Live Sound course.
Along with Orbital Sound
Sound is among them and is currently preparing to run its ‘Mixing Musicals’ course again, on 27-28 August. Aimed at helping aspiring live theatre sound operators to progress to the next level, the course combines theory, practice and a West End show visit. Enquire quickly to avoid disappointment as numbers are strictly limited to 24.

(see box, left), Britannia Row is one of a growing number of prestigious live audio providers to be looking to the wider future of the industry with their own training programmes. Commenting as the first students for its Live Sound Technology course commenced their studies on 1 July, BRPT MD Matthias Postel said that its efforts recognised a disillusionment “with the level of knowledge that new entrants have in this sector. There are limited opportunities to train for live sound, and existing courses have little practical or industry input.” Its own initiative in this area will pair core live sound skills with consideration of other
daily responsibilities. “As well as receiving full core technical training in all aspects of live sound, our trainees will be versed in such aspects as health and safety, show procedures, customs documentation and even how to set up as and be in business as a freelancer for those who may chose that path in the future,” said Postel. Meanwhile, in addition to
strengthening their domestic UK interests, several leading audio education providers are looking further afield. Inherent in this move are several significant points of recognition: the generally excellent reputation of course providers; the variety and depth of UK tuition; and the fact that – although there are undoubtedly many, many excellent courses in mainland Europe – they are more sparse in number. dBs Music is among those
to be exploring overseas opportunities. The private sector education provider opened its first centre in Plymouth 15 years ago, following up with locations in Camborne and Bristol during the past two years. Its programme today runs the gamut from a two-year extended BTEC diploma in Music Production to an accelerated BA (Hons) degree programme in Live Sound.
