Hybrid brake set for production
Lanxess announced this month that the first automotive brake pedal to be manufactured using its thermoplastic composite hybrid technology will begin series production in an undisclosed premium car before the end of the year. The component will be
produced by ZF Friedrichshafen and manufactured in the company’s Tepex continuous fibre reinforced thermoplastic composite sheet overmoulded with its Durethan PA6 resin (Lanxess acquired the Tepex technology through its purchase of Bond Laminates).
Lanxess said the pedal
offers the strength of steel at half the weight. “Tepex makes it possible to
economically manufacture more than a million compo- nents in large scale opera- tions,” said Dr Michael Zobel, head of the Lanxess high performance materials business.
Zobel said smartphone
manufacturer RIM is currently producing more than a million battery housings a month for its Blackberry phones in a glass reinforced Tepex grade. ❙

Kaplast crate wins packaging award
Croatian packaging producer Kaplast has won the best technical solution category in the country’s national Cropak awards competition for a beer crate developed for the Laško and Union breweries in Solvenia. The crate was developed by
Kaplast together with its Belgian partner DW Plastics and uses IML decoration and overmoulding techniques. ❙

Arburg expands in Mexico
Arburg marked the opening of its new Mexican subsidiary’s building at Querétaro in Mexico last month with an open house event.
