Engel extends Speed line with 650 tonne hybrid
The new machine launches at K2013
Engel has extended its e-Speed range of toggle- clamp packaging injection moulding machines with a 650 tonne hybrid design. The e-Speed 650 draws on some of the tried- and-tested technologies found on the company’s high performance e-Motion all-electric and specialised closure moulding e-Cap machines, but adds in a new energy saving kinetic drive. This kinetic technology uses a flywheel mounted within the machine frame that stores energy recovered during the braking part of the clamping cycle and then
releases it to other
machine functions, such as accelerating the clamp. When the storage capacity of the flywheel system is reached, excess energy from the generator is fed back into the power network rather than being converted into wasted heat. Engel says this means the e-Speed 650 can avoid power peaks, allowing it to run on a constant connected load. The injection unit on the new machine is a traditional
inline system using a more conventional hybrid arrange- ment of electric plasticising screw drive and hydraulic injection. It is capable of speeds up to 800 mm/s. According to Engel cto Dr Stefan Engleder, the energy saving features do not compromise perfor- mance. “This is a 650 tonne all-electric clamp that can reach dry cycle times of below 2.5s and
cycle times of less than four seconds,” he says. Other machine features include a new two part safety gate designed to improve mould access for operators, and optional cooling water and pneumatic options. The new machine will be running at the K fair producing thin wall containers on an 8+8 cavity stack mould. ❙

MWV invests
in pharma
MeadWestvaco Corporation has embarked on a $7.5m expansion of its pharma- ceutical dispensing systems Centre of Excellence at Hemer in Germany. The project is designed
to capitalise on the unit’s fast growth, especially in preservative-free packaging solutions, and includes expansion of clean room moulding and assembly capacity.
“This investment underlines MWV’s position as an innovation leader in healthcare dispensing systems,” says Sven-Uwe Höhm, vice president & general manager of the company’s medical plastics division. The expansion pro-
gramme is expected to finish by the end of the year. ❙
