itched between the towns of Gramisch and Mittenwald at Germany’s Southernmost ebb is where you will find the luxury spa and cultural hideaway, Schloss Elmau. In a setting that can


only be described as postcard picture-perfect, the hotel is nestled amongst the Wetterstein mountain range, and guests are spoilt with views of some of the most picturesque and largest peaks in Germany including the 2969m Zugspitze. The approach to the castle is a winding gravel track through a pine forest from the small Bavarian village of Klais, where you will find a sunny yellow quadrangle that awaits you.


The castle, standing at an impressive elevation of 1060m, was first opened in 1916 by Johannes Müller and the history of Schloss Elmau can still be felt today. The hotel


was originally intended to be an artistic community where ‘helpers’ cared for visiting guests and artists, and although short-lived, this scheme allowed young people from around the world to gain work experience whilst being inspired by celebrated artists of all genres. Schloss Elmau is still celebrated as a cultural ambassador for the art, music and literary worlds, hosting world-renowned artists and authors to this day.
