ot traditionally a tourist destination, the sunny southern region offers a feast for the eyes with its pristine beaches, ancient olive groves,
historic masserie (farmhouses), medieval towns and Roman ruins. Unique and bountiful to the region are the iconic truilli and limestone dwellings constructed with a cylindrical base and conical tiled roof.
It’s no surprise that the Pugliese culture is dominated by its local epicurean traditions. A foodie’s paradise, Puglia’s fresh simple cuisine is drawn from its regional agriculture and miles of coastline. Bordering the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Puglia’s proximity to fresh fish allows for true ‘sea- to-table’ dining. ‘Crudo,’ literally translating to ‘raw,’ is a classic preparation of local seafood simply served with sea salt, lemon juice and olive oil. With a landscape defined by olive trees (approximately 60 million in total), Puglia produces 40% of the nation’s olive oil. Its fertile land and predictable climate also allow the region to be an ideal environment for producing rich red wines.
