This foam rack idea was copied from Bob Hunt. Allen watched him take and return many a Stunt model to and from the Vintage Stunt Championships using this system (at left). Allen liked the idea, so he “borrowed” (stole) it. Bob Whitney manufactures carbon wheel pants and gear (above). He does some nice work, and you can contact him with information in the column.
Foam rack for van
I have received some calls and e-mails lately on how to safely and effectively pack models for contest trips. I would like to reprise a picture, published before in FLY- ING MODELS, to emphasize what I learned from Bob Hunt. Bob showed me how he cut and fitted a piece of two-inch thick blue foam near the mid-point of his van. I simply copied (stole) his idea and here is the end result.
I have had as many as seven models brought home from the VSC in that van. I use a lot of bubble wrap between the air- planes as they nestle in the individual cra- dles. The edges of the blue foam and the ver- tical slots cut in the foam are lined with some yellow foam. The squeaking of the blue foam against the sides of the van will drive you nuts. The softer yellow foam keeps your sanity longer on extensive journeys.
CF gear and wheel pants Bob Whitney, of the Florida contingent,
has been able to provide some wonderful car- bon fiber items to save weight and even a bit more class to your noblest latest Stunt mod- el. He has worked carbon fiber spinners for some scale classes, and now he is making landing gear and wheel pants. Whitney charges $25 for his landing gear. Silver Foxx 40 engines
Lew Woolard has been known for his Fox .35 engines forever, but he also reworks the 40 sized engines that come out of that Fort Smith, Arkansas plant. Lew’s engines have that “grunt” sound and act in the same Stunt-like manner. He makes available the new Fox .40 Stunt with their plain bearing engine with an iron piston and steel sleeve. Name your poison as far as a venturi is con- cerned and Lew can cut one for your partic-

Cowl ducting by Keith Trostle If you need to get the air out of your cowl and would like a neat exhaust port, then look no further as Keith Trostle takes us to class with his neat and effective method of creating a strong and sculptured air exhaust in his latest Dick Mathis Chizler. Note the picture example provided in the column. He egg-crates sections of thin aircraft strength plywood and then cuts the perimeter of the cowl exit opening to insert the egg-crate into the air exit. Lew Woolard builds a very nice engine for Stunt. This Fox .40 (above) is another fine example of Lew’s excellent work. Contact information is provided in the text. Keith Trostle has a unique way of creating the air exit holes at the bottom aft end of his Stunt cowls. This shot (at right) includes the basic egg- crate start and the finished product.
