The Sky is the Limit for our Student

Journalists Half past

morning does not seem an alluring time for anyone to catch a train, but to an eager group of Student Journalists it was nothing compared to the day we were about to embark on. We had been waiting for this very exciting and special trip for a long time, and we were all bubbling with excitement to visit Sky News Studios.

seven on a Monday

On arrival at the studios there was a small introduction, after which we were put into small groups known as ‘our studio groups’. Initially there was a fascinating tour around the studios, learning very interesting facts and some of us were even lucky enough to see a presenter! After this intriguing tour, we were all brought into a very brightly coloured room, with lights flashing in every possible direction. We were given an introduction into the process of making a news report.

Each group was assigned to a different studio either labelled Studio 1, Studio 2, Studio 3 or Studio 4, each given a different goal to achieve, using different equipment to create the end report. This activity was based on Social Networking. There was a different role for each individual in the group, such as camera operator, director, producer, scriptwriter, editor and of course, the reporters themselves.

Studio 1 focused on the introduction in which they had to tell the audience what the headline is and to grip the audience to that story. Studio 2 focused on a location report, using the ‘Greenscreen’. They had to pretend they were in the location of the problem they were reporting on. Studio 3 focused on an eyewitness report, they had to speak to somebody who was involved in the situation. Finally there was Studio 4 that focused on ‘an expert interview’ whereby they had to interview a person who had a lot of knowledge of the topic at hand. The different studio groups had to write a script for their report and also ‘chop and cut’ various clips to create one small video, this was the editor’s job, and they also had to choose a moving background for Studio 2.

After an hour of hard work, the individual studios’ reports were finished, and they were all put together to form one news report and it was a huge success! The reports were all brilliant, and all the

Journalists certainly learnt a lot from this task which was very enjoyable. Sasha, a Student Journalist in 7W1, said “it was a fantastic experience, I enjoyed it very much, despite the long train journey, it was brilliant! The studios were very impressive, and I learnt a lot from my job of being director”.

After lunch, the writers left the studios, very tired and with a lovely free gift of a pencil case, pen, notebook and Sky information pack! We all walked back to the station with memories of a superb day to cherish.
