To make it a little bit harder, turn the stick over and use the butt end of the stick to make the save. If you want to get even more advanced, get them to aim the rebound at a certain spot.

Ditch the Goalie Stick

fi eld stick. A girls’ fi eld stick can create too much of a rebound, although rebounds are less about pocket size and more about the way your wrists bend. If you do give off a rebound, track where the ball goes and don’t let it out of the crease.

I have a dog named Boone who lives with my parents in Colorado. He’s not any particular breed, so I just say he’s a good-looking mutt. He’s stubborn, like me. It runs in the family.

MY SURFBOARD

I have a couple, including a Becker short board. I can’t ride it to save my life. But I call it Blue. Weirdly, I named my board, but I’ve never named my sticks.

At my fi rst World Cup [in 2009], we were all rookies and I was trying to be perfect and do everything. There was a lot of pressure we put on ourselves. This time, we know what to expect. No matter what, it’s going to be an incredible competition, and I have a ton of faith in the people I’m playing with. We can do it.

I’m defi nitely a morning person, and I’m very chatty in the morning. I love coffee. It’s my favorite thing. I get a Mexican mocha with skim milk every morning.

Having quick wrists and snapping my wrists made it into my lacrosse game from playing ice hockey when I was younger. I use that more now than I probably did in college, because I’m shooting on people more as [assistant] coach [at USC] — that and having soft hands, and moving your stick with your body.

MY CALIFORNIA

The ocean is my favorite thing about living here. I was born in the mountains in Colorado, but now I’m a water girl, a beach person. Colorado in the summer is amazing — I love the thunderstorms — but it’s the snow that gets to me. Celebrity sightings? Let’s see...

We have what we call a “skeleton

stick.” It’s a stick with the mesh cut out of it. Give it to the goalie and take light shots at the goal using tennis balls. You want the goalie to watch the ball go through the stick and get square with her shoulders and hips behind the ball.

Ben Affl eck, Arnold Schwarzenegger, LeBron James, Kevin Durant. They use USC a lot to fi lm Nike commercials, so I’ve seen more athletes than movie stars.
