UNDER THE RADAR LIONS ROAR IN BEAVER STATE West Linn (Ore.) has established itself as the girls’ lacrosse team to beat in Oregon and boasts one of the most talented squads in the Northwest.
The Lions’ defense — led by Genna Hughes, Caitlin Bernert and Mary Richardson — allowed the fewest goals in the state. Tara Sonnemaker continued her trajectory as one of the top goalies in Oregon after earning
fi rst-team all-state honors last season as a junior. West Linn fi nished 12-1 and won the state championship with a 19-13 victory over defending champ Lake Oswego, the team that beat the Lions for the state title in 2012.
West Linn (Ore.) won the state championship with a 19-13 win over defending champ Lake Oswego (Ore.).
“Our league, the Three Rivers League, is very competitive, with three of the top fi ve teams in the state — based on power rankings,” West Linn coach Meg Elston said. “By midseason, we beat Oregon City, they beat Lake Oswego, and Lake Oswego beat us. It’s been a great season in that regard with no one team dominating the league.” Freshman Natalie Byrne who scored six goals in the championship game, leading West Linn to its fi rst championship since the program was West Linn- Wilsonville in 2003.
