How the former C.W. Post became the new Adelphi in Division II royalty

BY MARK MACYK I

t’s an epidemic now forgotten to history. But in summer 2011, the LIU Post women’s lacrosse team had a bad case of Adelphitis.

Adelphitis was an affliction that struck Long Island lacrosse players without warning in the prime of their playing careers. this was before the coaching changes at Division I stony Brook and Hofstra crowded the landscape. Back then, the best Long Islanders hoping to stay close to home chose Division II. that meant LIU (then C.W.) Post or Adelphi. At the time, it seemed like the future Pioneers made the logical choice. LIU Post won it all in 2007 and won the North Region in

2008. meg mcNamara was settling in as the coach and came with a pedigree that included four NCAA championships as a player at maryland and one as an assistant at LIU Post.

“she didn’t really give me much room for an option,” senior goalie Dominique mosca said of mcNamara. “she kept e-mailing and it was like, ‘Wow this coach really wants me.’ she always said, ‘one day, you will have a ring on your finger.’” mosca graduated with two rings, but that was hard to picture two years ago. From 2009 to 2011, all the rings in Division II went to Adelphi. the Panthers lost just once during that time. that the loss came to LIU Post, thanks to a stellar game from mosca, then a freshman, offered little solace. the Pioneers fell to Adelphi in the NCAA semifinals in 2009 and 2010. that’s when one of the most bizarre side effects of Adelphitis started manifesting itself.

JACKIE SILEO

Sileo had four goals and two assists in a 10-7 championship game victory over Limestone, giving her an NCAA-record 37 career tournament points. Just another accolade to add to the mantle for Division II’s all-time leading scorer, who led the nation in assists (117) and points (178) as a junior.

RECORD: 20-0 COACH: Megan McNamara (sixth year)

UNSUNG HERO | Bridgett Soares Soares, a senior, was the soul of the Pioneers’ unheralded top-10 defense. She never played lacrosse before college, moving around a lot in a military family and most recently hailing from Yuma, Ariz. She already is a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.

TURNING POINT | Adelphi’s illegal cradle in the NCAA semifinal A furious second-half rally from Adelphi had LIU Post two minutes away from being sent home when Danielle Jaycox was called for an illegal cradle — one of those calls you’re just glad you didn’t have to make. On the ensuing possession, Jenna Pierro tied the game and with 5.3 seconds remaining, Jackie Sileo got free from a game-long faceguard to clinch a 7-6 victory.
