For a minute, it looked like Le Moyne wouldn’t make the tournament, much less win it
BY JOEL CENSER i
n many ways, Le Moyne’s 11- 10 win over Mercyhurst in the ncaa Division ii championship
followed the usual script. The upstate new york juggernaut withstood a furious
fourth-quarter rally from Mercyhurst to bring the Dolphins their fourth Division ii title.
Le Moyne did it with the usual combination of dominant defense and opportunistic offense. senior goalie Jeff White was named the championship’s Most outstanding player after making 13 saves, helping to hold an explosive Laker offense scoreless during 20 minute stretches in the first
Two midseason losses endangered Le Moyne’s postseason prospects, but the Dolphins fought their way back from the bubble and won an NCAA championship.
and second half. at the other end, the Dolphins picked their spots in transition and were effective using pick games to initiate against Merychurst’s imposing backline. Le Moyne’s championship teams traditionally have been built around brains, brawn and an ample number of slick sticks. The Dolphins won their last Division ii championship in 2007, downing Mercyhurst 6-5 when a tipped pass went in the goal with just one second remaining in regulation. yet for all the familiar territory talk, less than two months
earlier, Le Moyne looked unlikely to cut down the nets on Memorial Day weekend.

ALEX CAMERON- CARTER
It’s amazing that Cameron-Carter went
from a
first team All-American to an honorable mention honoree this spring because he didn’t lose much off his shot. He was a rock on the backline for the Dolphins and held Mercyhurst’s playmaker Brian Scheetz to just one goal in the title game.

WINNING PEDIGREE LE MOYNE DOLPHINS
RECORD: 18-2 COACH: Dan Sheehan (16th year)
UNSUNG HERO | Nate Frechette It’s not always easy to be the leading goal-scorer on a national championship team and still qualify as an unsung hero, but somehow Frechette did it. He was incredibly efficient all season, illustrated by the national championship game when he scored three goals on four shots while dishing out an assist.
TURNING POINT | Getting the third seed in the North region When the Dolphins earned an away seed coming off the Northeast-10 championship, which included a win over North top seed Adelphi, they had their motivation. Le Moyne was peaking at the right time, and the extra incentive of being snubbed (from the players and coaches perspective) gave them the impetus to make their run to the title.
