BARBICAN LIFE
Tunnel Boring Machine Elizabeth breaks through at Canary Wharf
please make their way to Gate 14 where your plane is now ready to board!”
subsidence is not impossible, it is highly unlikely with modern tunnelling technology, and when the tunnel boring machines pass under us, the time taken will be relatively short.
One of the machines, called Elizabeth, which will drive one of the twin tunnels under the Barbican has just broken through into the Canary Wharf station excavation having already travelled from the Limmo Peninsula launch site near the Thames at Canning Town. Its sister machine, Victoria, is due to break through in the next couple of weeks. So far tunnelling on the
scheme has taken place without any significant subsidence reports. The main running tunnels are due to be completed in the third quarter of 2014 when the machines which will be tunnelling under the Barbican reach their destination at the Farringdon station excavation.
