not keen on wasabi) there is plenty on the menu that appealed to me – but some may need some explanation from the attentive, but not over so, waiting staff.


In essence the dishes seem very much to lend themselves to sharing – and it helps if you are reasonably adept with chopsticks, although other eating utensils are available – after all it’s not easy to slice up a steak with chopsticks – even one as nice and tender as served at Sushinho.


Indeed one is spoilt for choice here and perhaps the bigger the party the better from a sharing point of view. We started with a smoked salmon roll, my sop to the sushi element of the menu, (including mango, cream cheese, avocado, parmesan and coriander). This was served in four pieces for sharing and was delicious. Perhaps we should have sampled some of the other roll offerings – the dragon roll (avocado, prawn tempura and tobiko), the Sushinho roll (cream cheese salmon and crab) etc. you can check these out on the website www.sushinho.com , but in retrospect perhaps as well we didn’t given how sated we were by the end of the meal.


Between us we ordered two main courses and again these were delivered separately for sharing. First was a truly beautifully cooked sea bass (the fish dish of the day). This was indeed a large piece of fish served whole and might have sufficed for the two of us on its own. It was grilled with crispy skin on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside – one of the nicest pieces of fish I’ve had at a London restaurant for some time. We had this with the restaurant’s speciality cassava chips with chipotle sauce on the side – a great combination. The Sushinho tartare sauce which came with the fish was pronounced excellent by my dining companion.


Our second main course was the


smaller, 5 ounce I believe, sized prime picanha steak. I had to go to Wikipedia to find out exactly what cut this relates to but apparently it is the much-prized in Brazil, rump cover or rump cap. It was tender, beautifully cooked again and served on a slate along with accompaniments. As sides we ordered Japanese mushrooms (cooked over a slice of pineapple) and onion ring tempura – and because we’d finished the first batch another serving of cassava chips with


chipotle sauce (definitely recommended). We chose a South African Chenin blanc to go with the fish and an Argentinian Malbec for the steak – both available by the glass on the very comprehensive, but mostly quite pricey, wine list.


By the time we’d finished all this we were pretty full – not always the case these days at some fancy restaurants, but we did decide to share a dessert – all in the interests of the review of course! We chose the passion crumble, chocolate, toffee, sesame tuille served in a glass – an interesting combination which definitely worked for me.


All in all an excellent meal. There are so many combinations of flavours and food types on the menu that it’s difficult to do it justice in a single review. Definitely one to go back to.
