I set about telling him about ‘triangulation’ – check the author out, check the information on two other sources, and check out who owns the website. You have probably heard of
‘Easywho’ – but he hadn’t yet. He checked his sources and settled into his homework, absentmindedly thanking me for his snack. I started cooking dinner and wondering what I recalled about the Armada. Didn’t they end up going around all of the British Isles ? I need not have bothered; my twelve year old was well up on the battle details. His eyes shone, as he explained how very few British ships could ‘win’ over a whole Armada. I listened – the day’s sclerosis was a distant memory, as the battle became real – motherhood remains hugely educational. Here was my beloved job, telling me about a battle plan animatedly, whose presence remains uplifting and humbling; uplifting for obvious reasons - and humbling, because nobody has ever given me any other work, where I love the job, and the job loves me right back.
