Drake’s Gym 1 Pardon Street EC1V 0LR .
ormer sprinter and Human Movement Science graduate Bert Stemarthe set up Drake’s Gym (behind Goswell Rd/Clerkenwell Rd junction) in 1999 so he could work with similarly minded personal trainers and clients wanting their expertise – an unusual move at the time. During the ‘90’s he worked at Holmes Place (pre- Virgin Active), witnessing the transition of personal training from high-end, outsourced niche speciality to much larger in-house service delivered by all sorts of different staff.
Sprinting is the second most powerful exercise after the weight lifting snatch and when competing Bert used to train for fifteen hours a week. He has been recommended by Barbican neighbour, Paul Bostock, who has trained with him weekly for some years and enjoys the variety of thoughtfully arranged exercises sessions.
When meeting Bert you’d never guess that in late ‘99 he had a major motorbike accident, coaching himself through not walking for three months. When I met him I was impressed with h

M Maxine Rhodes, Massage Therapist
at combines with a warm and generous nature for a truly th
experience”. Treatments include: Swedish, deep tissue, aromatherapy, relaxation, Indian head, lymphatic drainage.
For my 60 minute deep tissue massage of shoulders, neck and upper back (stressed from swimming, martial arts and yoga), Maxine used coconut oil with arnica balm. I’m sensitive to the cold and appreciated her using a hot stone intermittently to warm the muscles. She quickly finds and treats tension that, if left, can lead to pain, reduced movement and injury. I exercise intensively, so prefer strong massage pressure. Maxine varies all aspects of the massage depending on the individual. I found the massage therapeutic (my main aim) and relaxing. To book an appointment call/text Maxine 07968 842 840.
