The natural life

Irish Beauty chats to Jane Iredale, CEO of Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, to learn more about her life out of work and what makes her happy.

 I began working in the industry because…After a career in the entertainment industry I had real burn-out and decided I wanted a change of career. What I’d always wanted to do was to make a difference in the lives of women. One day it occurred to me that there was a need for make-up that was good for the skin. I’d seen skin disorders threaten the careers of models and actresses and also the emotional toll bad skin took. I didn’t think “Oh, I’ll create a make-up line!” What I had in mind was one product, a base that nurtured and protected the skin. That was my first product, the loose minerals Amazing Base. It grew from there.

 If I wasn’t in the beauty industry I would…It would be something to do with growing things. I’m an avid gardener, from roses to potatoes. I think I would have been involved in organic farming in some fashion, helping to make small farms profitable and encouraging young people to get involved.

 The best thing about my job is… By far creating the new products. I love to solve problems so I can feel my juices running when I have the opportunity to bring something all the way from ingredients to final packaging. But, I also love going out into the field and meeting our consumers.

 An average day for me is… Very unpredictable. Sometimes I think I have a clear day but then the deluge hits, so I learn to roll with it.

 My ideal weekend would be… A weekend in June. I’d go to the farmers’ market in the morning and stagger back with my shopping bags. I’d then tackle my own garden from planting to pruning. I’d watch my dogs playing in the sun and rolling on the grass and then have a cup of tea with my Mum. Somewhere in there would be a relaxed dinner with friends and a game of golf.

 My favourite book is…I have always loved Wind in the Willows.

 The most famous person I have met is…The Queen, but she probably doesn’t remember me.

 My favourite film is…Love Actually, which my husband and I watch every Christmas Eve.

 My favourite part of the world is… Fortunately, I have the opportunity to travel a lot. The truth is that I don’t

have a favourite part of the world; I love so much of it. But if you ask me what is my favourite city, I would say London, hands down.

 I could not live without…The feeling of being useful and making a difference.

 My favourite beauty treatment is…I love anything to do with essential oils but my very, very favourite is a pedicure.

When growing up my role model was…My mother. From her, I learned the importance of finishing what you start and not being defeated by anything. And she never gave up. She would always solve the problem.

 I would like to be remembered as…Someone who cared enough to make a difference in people’s lives.
