Aesthetically pleasing
You can meet your clients’ demands for enhanced results, by undergoing training, investing in the latest medical beauty equipment and gaining adequate insurance.
The latest research from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), published in the report Global Study of Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Performed in 2011, states that Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox® and Dysport) leads the demand for non-surgical procedures at 38.1% (
www.isaps.org).
Professor Laurence Kirwan MD, FRCS, FACS, a doctor specialising in cosmetic procedures, believes that the increase he has seen in demand is due to down to pressures in the workplace.
In the last six months, Professor Kirwan reports that he has completed more than 50 procedures on patients at his clinic who say that their employment prospects were a major factor in their decision to undergo aesthetic surgery.
“Executives in their 40s and 50s are increasingly coming up against competition from candidates 20 years younger than themselves,” he says. “It is human nature to be drawn towards individuals who look fresher and younger. Employers are no different from anybody else, regardless of what might be a difference in qualifications or experience.
“The more youthful they feel the more confident they are that they can not only hold onto their positions in the current job market but that they can go and compete with youngsters.”
When it comes to improving the figure, experts state there has been
50
an increase in the demand for liposuction in middle aged clients. Surgeon Dr Alan J. Kingdon, a leader in the field of liposuction with over 30 years’ experience, comments: "It is interesting that there is this increase in Liposuction procedures in the age group 35-40. I certainly see this in my own lists. These patients are very conscious of their appearance and can afford to have the treatment. There is a tendency for the weight to increase with age so that more fat deposits appear, particularly around the chest area causing ‘Man Boobs’ and this phenomenon appears to be more common."
According to non-invasive liposuction clinic The Lipo Centre, demand for laser lipolysis – a non-surgical alternative - has rocketed since the beginning of 2013. In the eyes of one of their fat-loss consultants, the reason for this is clear: having been left disappointed by plans to lose weight through a diet or exercise in the past, people are now waking up to the potential that painless and quick treatments such as laser lipolysis have to achieve their ideal body shape.
Medical beauty
in the salon You can see there is certainly a demand for medical beauty procedures, and now it’s your opportunity to maximise on this.
“At a time when beauty businesses are working harder than ever to hold their market share and remain profitable, the introduction of cosmetic medical services is viewed by many beauty salon owners as a welcome value- added service,” says Dr Joshua Berkowitz of Wimpole Aesthetics, a medical doctor with over 30 years’
expertise whose specialises in anti- ageing medicine.
“As a therapist who has been offering all forms of advanced skin and medical treatments in Carrigg Skin and Beauty Clinic in Bray for many years, I have mixed feeling on them,” comments Noiren Carrigg of Carrigg Brady Beauty.
“As Aestheticians we have a basic level of skin education when you put it beside that of a dermatologist, so it is up to us to attend seminars from dermatologists and cosmeceutical courses on any advancement in the field of skin.
“We have to check the training we receive, whether we take on a chemical peel range or buy a machine to treat the skin, and that is what makes us into excellent cosmeceutical Aestheticians. At that point we can discuss skin within the medical field and be proud of offering good cosmeceutical treatments and homecare.”
Noiren continues: “We can give clients CFT (combined facial therapy) choices in our clinics including chemical peels, and IPL and LED light therapy to effectively treat pigmentation, skin rejeuvenation and red veins.”
“With the right training, the right products and the right therapists, there has never been a better time for skin specialists to excel.” However, Noiren warns: “Remember we can only do so much and need to know when to recommend a medical practitioner in certain cases.”
