Over the last couple of years, spray tanning has rocketed into the headlines for a variety of reasons, from celebrity endorsements following the success of reality TV programmes like Talifornia and Celebrity Salon, through to sensationalist headlines regarding the increased risk of Cancer from the inhalation of DHA.
But, despite the furore some of these headlines may have caused at the time, the sunless tanning industry has been hard at work to ensure your clients really can find the safest way to achieve that sun-kissed glow.
Going green One such example might be found in the emergence of the ‘Organic Tan’. Although organic tanning solutions, in one form or another, may have been bubbling away in the background for a number of years, it is only recently that they have come to the fore to fit in with today’s modern lifestyles and the quest for ‘greener’ living.
“With consumers being increasingly aware of organic produce and household items, they are also discovering that there are more things they can do to enhance their green living. It’s therefore no wonder that clients are beginning to consider organic alternatives within the cosmetic ranges they use and thus organic skin care products are beginning to increase in popularity as well, and we found that a large number of our customers were seeking a high quality [organic] spray tan solution to offer to clients,” says whitetobrown.
Express delivery Of course, not all clients are looking to go down the organic route, some clients may just be looking for something that works a little bit quicker and if that’s the case then many of the tanning product

houses have now developed express tan formulations, some of which allow the colour guide to be washed off in just 60 minutes.
Holly Vince, Category Manager for Beauty at Salon Services, told IB: “Spray tanning formulations have improved significantly over the last couple of years. In particular we have seen a move towards the fast acting spray tan that develops in as little as one to two hours, compared to the previous six hour development time. These new tans now come with a more natural colour guide allowing clients to walk away from treatments with a natural glow, opposed to the darker colour guides that were typical of original spray formulas.”
These express solutions, when applied with the latest state-of-the-art equipment such as the new compressor guns with interchangeable solution pots, adjustable spray patterns and even heated air flow, mean that clients can now experience a comfortable tanning session with shading and contouring techniques applied faster than ever before, and you can increase your turnaround as you save time on each and every application.
Scents and sensitivity Those of you with sensitive noses may have noticed that the scent of spray tan solutions has also been improved over the last few years.
Previously, one of the most common complaints about spray tan formulations, from both technicians and clients alike, was regarding the ‘fake tan smell’. Fortunately many of today’s formulations are infused with botanical and/or citrus extracts such as Bearberry, Lemongrass and natural Aloe Vera to ensure yours and your clients’ senses are suitably tantalised without the once over-bearing spray-tan smell.
Bring on the booths From the latest washable inflatable tents which can be inflated and deflated in just 30 seconds through to the more traditional pop up cubicles – which need no poles, and can often fit in even the smallest rooms – if you’re a mobile tech or just tight on space these ingenious designs will help to protect your working environment from overspray and can be easily packed away at the end of the treatment until you are ready to use it again.
Lightweight and portable, tanning tents and pop-up cubicles often feature a built- in flap for extraction systems, to ensure your client receives the safest possible tan.
Salon-based techs can also take advantage of the more permanent booth designs with built-in lighting and heated, whisper-quiet, air-flow extraction systems to ensure you clients receive a comfortable tanning experience.
Tanning training Perhaps one of the biggest criticisms about the tanning industry from outsiders is related to the perceived lack of training, therefore there has been a lot of focus on development and training from sunless tanning brands, who not only recognise the importance of therapists learning the most effective way of spray tanning, but also the skills and knowledge needed to consult with their clients to advise on the perfect tone for their skin.
To help develop these skills, Salon Services will be holding spray tanning courses in Dublin across a number of dates including 24th June, 30th July and 15th August.
Using the Tantruth range, you will learn the skills of both self and spray tanning, using a simple technique which can improve your profit potential. Over the duration of the course attendees will cover client consultation, science of tanning, health and safety, preparing the skin for tanning, spray tanning techniques, self-tanning techniques, client aftercare, retailing and marketing.
Alternatively, the next Sunjunkie spray tanning courses take place on Monday 20th May and Monday 24th June. Run by Audrey Heffernan of Hennessy Hair & Beauty, training takes place in the company’s Douglcloyne store in Cork. The cost of the course, which is available upon request, includes a Sunjunkie spray tanning kit.
Of course, many other tanning brands also have extensive training programmes available so it’s always worthwhile checking with your spray tanning supplier to see how you could take advantage of these opportunities.
