Whether they are at home or on the go, today’s consumers have an insatiable appetite for watching video on IP-connected devices like smartphones and tablets. According to ABI research, companies such as Netfl ix, Hulu, Apple, and Amazon helped drive the OTT video market past $8 billion in 2012. To succeed in this competitive OTT and multiscreen marketplace, IPTV service providers must meet the quality expectations demanded by a new generation of consumers.
From the outset, IPTV providers have always strived to deliver a high quality of experience (QoE) to consumers. However, many operators have limited to no visibility of the viewing experience from the most critical point in the delivery chain — subscriber homes. Over the next few years, as the IP video domain explodes to support more OTT and multiscreen services, this issue must be addressed or operators face the threat of increased operational costs and customer churn.
