barns that receive a letter from the company notifying them of buck- shot or other foreign matter in a carcass are encouraged to contact the company to learn more about alleviating the problem. “We want to provide proactive
feedback to our suppliers,” he says. “Ranchers may have no idea this is occurring. We want them to get a heads-up on what’s happening. We will gladly give them a tour of
our facility to view our operations. If we can work together on this, it will make them better suppliers to us. And we will be better custom- ers for them.”
“If an animal has been on the receiv- ing end of birdshot, the carcass may have to be condemned. For a 600-pound carcass, that’s an $800 to $900 loss,” says Dan Hale, Texas AgriLife Extension beef cattle economist.
