4 Steps for Proper Intranasal Vaccine Use


The intranasal mode of administration is not new, but producers may not be familiar with using this type of vaccine. Michael Nichols, DVM, cattle and equine technical services, Zoetis, recommends producers fol- low these simple steps to help ensure proper use of intranasal vaccines:

Store at the proper temperature. As with all animal health products, vaccines should al-


ways be handled and stored properly to help ensure maxi- mum effi cacy. When vaccines are received, they should be transferred immediately to the refrigerator. The proper storage temperature is normally between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius or 36 to 44 degrees Fahrenheit. Remember to check refrigerator temperature regularly.


Start with the right equipment. Getting started begins with a sterile transfer needle. Insert one end of the transfer needle into the bottle of


sterile diluent, which is the plastic vial with the liquid. Then, turn the bottle of diluent upside down. Insert the


other end of the transfer needle into the glass bottle contain- ing the freeze-dried vaccine. A vacuum in the glass bottle will pull the liquid from the plastic bottle. When all liquid has been transferred, remove the transfer


needle and gently swirl the bottle containing the freeze- dried vaccine and sterile diluent. There are lots of choices when it comes to syringes.


Producers also have the option of using the cannula that is provided with INFORCE 3. Once the syringe is chosen, transfer the vaccine to the appropriate size syringe or vac- cination gun.


Follow rehydration and storage directions. When you are ready to use the vaccine, it is important


to never reconstitute, or rehydrate, more vaccine than can be used in 1 hour. If all the doses aren’t emptied out of the vial, store it with the unused doses in a cool place away from sunlight. As with all reconstituted modifi ed-live vaccines, discard


the unused vaccine. Protect the syringe or vaccination device from sunlight.


Ultraviolet light can kill the modifi ed-live viruses in the vaccine.
