Our dealers’ sales were down,

so they slashed their inventories in full-blown panic mode. Cattle pro- ducers were sitting on their wallets postponing even their most needed purchases, and the uncertainty on the political landscape only seemed to heighten the problems at hand. As a result, the spoiling growth

we had become accustomed to for the past decade as one of the largest livestock equipment manufacturers in the world came screeching to a halt, resulting in some serious belt- tightening company wide. Right when we thought we saw

the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, we took a shot from both barrels in the form of the 2010 to 2011 drought — right in the heart of our best markets. You know the story from here: grass got brown, hay got high, cows moved on to greener pastures. But, like all things in life, econo-

mies come back around, rain even- tually begins to fall and politicians continue to be, well, politicians. And since cattle numbers remain low and prices are strong, people are upgrading their equipment all over the nation, which means record sales for our company. Just last year we posted a 54

percent increase in squeeze chutes alone. That’s a new company re- cord, and a pretty good one when you consider we probably already sold more chutes than any company in the country. The best news is that we don’t see it letting up for some time. In fact, I even went out and bought a startup herd of my own just last week. First cattle I’ve owned in 25 years. Now if that’s not a statement of optimism I’ m not sure what is! Anybody know where I can get a good deal on a chute? Jeff Rash, vice president, sales and marketing, Priefert Mfg.
