LITTLE FERRY HOOK AND LADDER CO. NO. 1

Little Ferry Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1, Little Ferry, N.J., has duti- fully protected its community since 1921. In October 2012, almost 4 feet of water surged into the station during Super- storm Sandy, destroying the station’s kitchen, two restrooms and bay area. It suddenly was difficult for the firefighters, who were forced to bunk a few blocks away, to properly serve the community. Rebuilding Together Bergen County, Glen Rock, N.J.,

brought together volunteers to gut and rebuild the interior of the station. Work included electrical, framing, tile, sheetrock/

painting, and kitchen and bathroom replacement. Volunteers from Rotary District 7490 and IBEW Local 164’s electricians donated hundreds of hours of service. The Borough of Little Ferry and the Little Ferry Volunteer Fire Department also pitched in to make the renovations possible. In addition, several companies gave in-kind donations or significant discounts for repairs and

materials, including Egyed General Contracting, Ulrich Kitchens, Kuiken Brothers, Norton’s Paint, Feldman Electric, OC Floor Gallery, Mohawk Tile, Stone Surfaces and Creative Bath Sales. A generous donation from the Sears Heroes at Home program, as well as funding from Rotary

District 7490, helped the building to reopen in February, ensuring Little Ferry’s volunteer firefighters again are able to serve their community of nearly 11,000 residents.
