in the mezzanine and through the mezzanine’s opening. “I think the quality of the fixtures and the layout of them really gave us that flexibility we were looking for,” Teel says. “At night, with only a couple lights on low, you can uplight the building’s cone and it gives you this wonderful diffused indirect light.” High-tech audiovisual capabilities were a major goal of the

Santa Rosa Recreation & Parks department. Initially, the city wanted 16 projectors that would project Isaac DeTurk’s racehorses running around the mezzanine in a 360-degree loop. Unfortunately, the idea would exceed the city’s $2.2 million budget, so TLCD Architec- ture found a cost-effective yet impressive alternative. “We used three mounted projectors, projecting onto a 16-foot screen at mez- zanine level that could stitch these images together. A standard drop-down screen is used for movie night, and the entire system can be used by anyone for a presentation,” Teel adds. The space also includes an iPod docking station for public use.

Hands-on Project The 15-month project was completed in April 2011. Several days per

week during about eight months of the renovation, Teel would walk from TLCD Architecture’s offi ce, which is 1 mile from the barn, to answer questions. “The barn was so funky in its construction and layout,” he says. “The way the conduit and piping and fi re sprinkler disappear inside the structure was the contractor and all the subs re- ally making it happen. This was truly a hands-on project and the abil- ity to be onsite so quickly played a big role in the fi nished product.”

Although the public shared some strong feedback in the early stages of design, there have been plenty of positive comments since the space opened. Teel says: “During the opening ceremony and a number of other events I’ve attended at the barn since, there are always people smiling and having conversations about how things go together and what kind of material was used. Sometimes it’s hard to get to the point where visi- tors celebrate a project, but this project has been really exciting in that way. Even with all the dust and graffiti in it when I first walked into the barn, there was just something about it. I knew if we played it simple and let the bones of the barn remain, it would be a great project.”
