PLANNING AHEAD: UBM Future Cities
UBM Future Cities is an online forum for thought, where leaders and experts with a passion for urban issues engage in daily discussion. More than 200 experts across transport, built environment, healthcare, architecture and design, electronics and IT share their hopes and concerns for the future of the city. We asked Future Cities Editor-in-Chief Nicole Ferraro for her thoughts on our urban fate, and which cities are raising the bar.

What is the Future Cities community most concerned about? Overpopulation, and the very real idea that we need new housing models; so we’ve spoken a lot about micro-units, taller skyscrapers, mixed-use buildings. Another topic is that our existing cities have been built around cars and roads that no longer serve us.

Which cities are making the biggest steps toward a better urban lifestyle for their citizens? I am extremely impressed by the efforts of Ron Huldai, Mayor of Tel Aviv, to encourage and nurture the thriving start-up scene there. Copenhagen is doing amazing work to reduce carbon emissions. Boston is also doing fantastic work with its New Urban Mechanics department. Solar cities are emerging in Gujarat, India.
Which London city initiatives do you most admire? The recent plan for safe cycling blew me away. I think cities need to consider signifi cant redesigns to take the pressure and focus off the automobile, and London’s plan is a big step towards getting there. It means disruption and aggravation for citizens, but big change isn’t possible without that. So, be patient everyone! I admire London for taking a leap forward here for the sake of its cyclists, the city’s overall health, and for the cities of the future.
