PHAROS

Lighting London’s Bridges SHOW: ARC

A new lighting scheme for the Golden Jubilee Footbridge, Waterloo, Blackfriars, Millennium, Southwark and London Bridges added eye- catching illumination and colour whilst saving energy. They were fi tted with Philips Color Kinetics fi xtures supplied by Architainment Lighting, with Aquila RGB LED fl oodlights, all controlled by Pharos LPCs. The lighting was designed by Paul Cook and commissioned by the Mayor to support London’s 2012 celebrations. Cook said: “The colours and patterns of light were strongly infl uenced by the Games branding. Individual lighting sequences were designed for each bridge. These came together as a synchronised light show and required an extremely accurate yet cost-effective control system. Although proposed as a temporary project, costs showed that some of the work could be permanent and provide a great legacy for this section of the Thames.” Thirteen riverside landmarks also co-ordinated their lighting with the bridges during the summer festivities. Seven of these were existing Pharos installations; the London Eye, County Hall the National Theatre, plus six new Pharos clients, including Tate Modern, HMS Belfast, Globe Theatre and the OXO Tower.
