A Perfect Partnership
Harley-Davidson, National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and National Police Week
E
ach year during the week in which May 15th falls, tens of thousands of law enforcement professionals, family members of fallen offi- cers and law enforcement supporters arrive in Washington, D.C. to honor the service and sacrifice of our fallen heroes. Harley-Davidson plays a major role in National Police Week, often with little recognition. On average approximately 340 names are
added to the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial each year. These include the names of the past year’s line-of-duty deaths (127 in 2012) and historic deaths that have been recently discovered. During National Police Week, families and colleagues of these fallen heroes come to our nation’s Capitol to “Respect, Honor and Remember” those who came before us. Organizing National Police Week is no small task and
consists of several law enforcement agencies, associations and organizations. There is a lot of support for National Police Week in Washington, D.C. and across the country and that is where Harley-Davidson comes in, directly and indirectly. National Police Week kicks off each year with a motorcycle
event know as LawRide. For 18 years, motorcycle enthusiasts have participated in the ceremonial ride from RFK Stadium in northeast D.C. to the Memorial for a wreath-laying cer- emony. Numerous law enforcement motorcycle clubs travel, in many cases more than 100 miles, to be a part of LawRide. The riders and their escorts are typically riding, as should be no surprise, Harley-Davidson®
motorcycles. To find out
more about LawRide and how you can participate in this event, go to
www.LawRide.com. Surviving family members, colleagues and escorts arrive
in Washington, D.C. and are met by law enforcement honor guards, then escorted to their hotels by Motor Officers, most on Harley-Davidson®
police motorcycles. The Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) organization
hosts seminars for family members and colleagues each year. As the families move around the D.C. area, they are escorted by officers, typically on Harley-Davidson®
cycles. Harley-Davidson Motor Company works closely with C.O.P.S. and is a major supporter of their work. Harley-Davidson works closely with the National Law
Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund by donating a Peace Officer Special Edition motorcycle to be raffled during National Police Week. This year will mark the seventh motorcycle the Memorial Fund has raffled and will bring the total donation from Harley-Davidson Motor Company
motor-
Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington’s Judiciary Square. The museum will tell the story of American law enforce- ment through high-tech, interactive exhibits, collections, research and education. Groundbreaking marks the start of construction on the museum which has a projected opening in spring 2015. The privately funded museum has launched an $80 mil-
lion capital campaign, with more than $65 million raised to date. Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clin- ton serve as co-chairs of the museum’s National Honorary Campaign Committee, which also includes seven former Attorneys General of the United States, as well as other former government officials and celebrities.
