Lighting 4

RCL will continue to innovate, both in the lights that we design and the systems used to control them. We have recently made a major investment in research and development, which will insure that RCL remains competitive in the future. Our policy of continuous product development will also see improvements made both to our current range of lights as well as new products. One area of particular interest to us currently is tunable white LEDs. iDirect offers a fantastic platform for development in this area and we are exploring how to include this technology into our luminaires. Looking forward, we expect to see continued growth in developing regions such as India and The Americas as well as continued demand in Asia, where projects are expanding in size and complexity as more and more specifiers come to recognise the full potential of our technology.

We hear you are launching your new lighting control system, iDirect, this year; could you tell us a little more about this new product?

Since RCL was formed, the main control system for our lights has remained our handheld remote control. More recently though, as projects have grown in size, we have looked to new technologies to achieve results. That’s why we’re introducing iDirect. iDirect is a powerful new system that allows luminaires to be controlled in pan, tilt and intensity using simple gestures on an iPad screen. The app, designed specifically for the iPad, features a number of pioneering features that make spotlight selection and control easier than ever before. Unlike other DMX-based systems, adding spotlights to iDirect is quick and intuituve: It uses a simple two-step process that does away with the need for DIP switches or other complicated addressing methods. Within iDirect, we have introduced Light Plans– an entirely new concept in spotlight selection; for the first time, lights can be selected from an onscreen reflected ceiling plan. Once selected, fittings can be individually adjusted using the Gesture Pad. Traditional DMX systems rely on the use of sliders, rotary controls and switches to control moving lights. This can be confusing, especially when adjusting pan and tilt. The Gesture Pad in iDirect offers a clean, user-friendly interface that anyone can learn to use in just a few minutes. Other features within iDirect include the scenes and dimming control panels. In addition to individual spotlight control, iDirect can operate as a centralised dimming system with the ability to adjust the intensity of all the spotlights in a single area. Fully customisable scenes provide even greater versatility, allowing schemes to be easily recorded and recalled from within the app.
