Our very own Devon Underhill talks to Remote Controlled Lighting about the inspiration behind its inception, exciting projects and what to expect in the future……..


Remote Controlled


Remote Controlled Lighting (RCL) have been involved in the Lighting industry for over a decade, could you tell me a bit more about the history of your company?


RCL began as a solution to a common problem: aiming spotlights mounted on high ceilings is both difficult and time-consuming. Previously ladders, scaffolding or mechanical lifts had to be employed, however using these can be hazardous, expensive, cause delays and require the floor space to be clear before adjusting the lights. In 1998 the banqueting staff at the Hilton hotel in London faced this problem. They wanted to light a range of table layouts without having to focus the spotlights by hand. Lighting Design International, the designers working on the project, approached the team at Precision Lighting Ltd who set about creating a solution. What they came up with was a spotlight that could be aimed and dimmed simply and quickly using a handheld remote controller. After the lights were installed in the hotel, it was quickly realised that the benefits of the system could be attractive to a much wider market including art galleries, stores and showrooms and Remote Controlled Lighting was born.


2 What sets RCL apart from the competition?


RCL are the only company in the world to specialise in the design and manufacture of low cost remote controlled spotlights. For over ten years, we have focused on producing moveable lights that can be controlled quickly and easily by non-technical staff. Our patented ‘Select and Direct’ technology offers users the ability to take control of their lighting and adjust it to suit their individual requirements. RCL prides itself on tackling any job, big or small, and as a result we’ve worked on a wide variety of projects, many of which have required bespoke elements. For us, the customer comes first and we will always endeavor to meet our clients’ needs.

RCL have been specified for some major projects, which one has been the most exciting to work on?


In 2008, Christie’s Auction House was planning the refurbishment of their King Street showrooms. The lighting designer’s brief was for a scheme that had to be flexible, robust and discreet. With constantly changing collections, it was necessary to have a versatile lighting system that could be easily operated. With thousands, if not millions, of pounds at stake in a highly competitive market, it was crucial that sale items were literally shown in their best light. RCL worked in conjunction with the auction house to produce a new product– the DR8. In addition to its compact design, the DR8 also included excellent glare control, another requirement of the brief. The fixture was designed and manufactured in just four months and 586 pieces were installed and operating on time. Since then, the DR8 has evolved to accept a range of lamp types while the number of RCL spotlights installed at Christie’s two London salerooms has risen to over 1,000 fixtures. Being able to adjust the spotlights from floor level has been a huge advantage for Christie’s as it no longer needs to work at height close to valuable pieces. Furthermore, RCL’s technology has meant that staff are able to accurately spotlight objects and adjust the dimming individually to achieve exactly the desired intensity and warmth on the artwork.
