Caffè Culture to take place in May

A vibrant and essential networking and business opportunity for café bar operators, the Caffè Culture Show takes place 15-16 May 2013 at Olympia in London.

The event has become a focal point for the industry, offering practical support and advice for all aspects of café bar and coffee shop operation. Visitors to the show will be able to interact with 230 specialist industry suppliers whilst the two main features, the Caffè Culture Business Theatre and the Caffé Culture Taste Experience Stage, will offer a full programme of free seminars and practical interactive demos to enable operators to learn the latest skills and techniques and hear vital industry hints and tips on how to enhance the profitability of their operation.

With a running programme of practical demonstrations and interactive sessions over the two days, the Taste Experience Stage is designed to help visitors reinvigorate their food and beverage offering in a way which is accessible and transferable to each visitor’s particular business type. Sector leaders will cover many key areas of coffee service using informal demonstrations and a specialist knowledge of the industry to impart vital skills. Paul Eagles will be opening the programme each day with a workshop on ‘Perfecting your Hot Chocolate,’ which looks at the importance of hot beverage choices including a good hot chocolate offering and practical advice on how to prepare quality hot chocolate on a coffee machine. Other sessions on the stage include Ben Townsend of The Espresso Room demonstrating essential techniques which offer quick and easy ways to improve your espresso whilst TV chef Peter Sidwell of Britain’s Best Bakery fame, provides a practical talk on some fantastic savoury baked goods that are easy to recreate even in the smallest café kitchens. The White Stuff presented by Hugo Hercod, from Relish continues the Taste

Third International Symposium on Multi-Strata

Agroforestry Systems

The Third International Symposium on Multi-Strata Agroforestry Systems will take place 16-20 September 2013 in Turrialba, Costa Rica.

More than 4 million tonnes of cocoa and close to 8 million tonnes of coffee are produced yearly mostly by Africa and Latin America who produce more than 60 per cent of the cocoa and coffee worldwide. Cocoa, coffee and other agricultural products from tropical perennial crops are grown by more than 32 million smallholders’ families in multi-strata agroforestry systems around the world. These systems often are of central importance for the farm economy and the livelihoods of smallholders and their families.

Historically, it has been shown that management intensification to achieve higher crop yields (with improved crop genotypes coupled with high fertilizer inputs, good pest and disease control) usually comes with a reduction in shade levels, reduction in tree density, a reduction in canopy cover and loss of farm biodiversity, which are also important sources of income for farming communities. There is clearly a need to propose alternatives to avoid this trend, and demonstrate that it is possible to simultaneously achieve high crop yields whilst retaining high levels of biodiversity and maintaining provision of environmental services.

In order to address these issues, the International Research Centre in Agronomy for Development (CIRAD), the Agriculture

Caffè Culture 2013 will take place 15-16 May 2013 at Olympia in London.

Experience programme with a demonstration on the importance of using the best ingredients with an emphasis on the impact that choosing the right milk product can have on the final offering. A round up of sessions from the Taste Experience Stage each day comes from the Beverage Standards Association demonstrating how to raise beverage standards and boost profits by serving high quality products together with preparation and serving advice to maximise impact. The Caffè Culture Business Theatre offers a further resource for visitors, hosting a series of seminars focusing on the key issues facing café bar operators today.

Elliot Gard, Event Director, said: “The Caffè Culture Show is not just an exhibition, it’s a real opportunity to build solid business practices based on shared experiences and practical advice, making it an unmissable date for serious operators in the industry. Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE), World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), Executive Planning Committee on Cocoa Farming (CEPLAC) and the Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) are jointly organising the Third International Symposium on Multi-Strata Agroforestry Systems with Perennial Crops, which will be held at the headquarters of CATIE in Turrialba, Costa Rica 16-20 September 2013. Partners in this event are the Central America and Cameroon Partnership Platforms (PCPs), INAFORESTA, and several IUFRO member organisations in the region. The symposium will provide a platform for researchers, academics, the private sector, value chain actors, journalists and communicators, as well as policy makers to share and exchange information and experiences; propose scientifically sound approaches to the study of agroforestry systems; and propose improved approaches that will satisfy the conflicting demands of increased production and enhanced provision of environmental services. A maximum of 200 participants can be accommodated at the event. Special registration rates will be offered to encourage early registration and the participation of graduate students. The organisers intend to fund a minimum of 4-5 outstanding doctoral or post-doctoral students or young professionals from Latin America, Africa and Asia to enable them participate in the symposium. Short abstracts for oral and poster presentations should be sent to contact@symposium-multistrata2013.org. Abstracts will be reviewed by the scientific committee of the symposium for acceptance either as oral or poster presentations. All abstracts accepted at the symposium will be assembled and distributed to the participants at the beginning of the event.
