MPE unveils ‘cold milling’ cocoa Gran-U-Lizer
Modern Process Equipment Corporation (MPE) in Chicago in the US has unveiled a new product, a ‘cold milling’ Gran-U-Lizer specially designed for the milling of cocoa.
“In their most natural, organic state, cacao beans contain a multitude of antioxidants and essential minerals beneficial to our health. The design of the cold milling Gran-U-Lizer maintains this purity of product through the utilisation of water-cooled rollers to eliminate the generation of heat,” said the company. “This grinder also features a proprietary tooth profile to cut and mill the beans and nibs into a high quality powder,” it said. “Additionally, MPE’s mill design excludes screens and hammers, thereby eliminating product stickiness and ‘gumming,’ which reduces product retention time and any increase in temperature. Typical capacities for MPE’s cocoa grinders range from 2,000 to 10,000 lb/ hour, depending on the grind size setting.

According to a recent National Coffee Association (NCA) survey, in 2012, 10 per cent of US households owned single-serve brewing systems, up from 3 per cent in 2007. “With home brewing on the rise, roasters and brands need a custom single-serve solution that not only meets growing consumer and market demand, but also provides them with flexible options to fit multiple business models – with a royalty free single-serve format, the UpShot Solution provides greater control over quality, production, distribution and price,” said Matt Cook, President of LBP.
The filter is compatible with Keurig and other single-serve brewers and is, the company claims, a more environmentally- friendly single-serve option because the filter is made from 100 per cent polypropylene, making it recyclable.
