The Korean market depends entirely on imports, and many importers and consumers remain unaware of the coffee varieties available from the US. However, the US enjoys a good reputation for high quality coffee.


In general, the report says, consumers tend to drink the least expensive instant coffee. Coffee is a popular and established beverage, but the market is very competitive.


Opportunities and challenges


Instant coffee has been a dominant market player since 2002 and it still holds the largest share of the market. The growth in sales of coffee mixes primarily depend on their convenience, but recently growth has been achieved using premium mixes, and as a result the quality of the coffee in mixes has improved.


In 2011, it was estimated that the Ready to Drink (RTD) section of the market had a value of approximately US$835 million. The popularity of RTD is attributed to the substantial growth of specialist coffee shop brands. Average unit prices for RTD increased by 2 per cent in 2011, mainly as a result of the ‘premium’ trend in the category. Operators of chained specialist coffee shops have collaborated with beverage manufacturers in order to produce RTD coffee through the retail channel. These specialist coffee shop branded RTD coffee products appeal to young consumers in their 20s and 30s, as they appreciate being able to enjoy the same coffee flavours and taste at a lower price. be willing to pay a relatively higher price when purchasing RTD coffee. They enjoy premium RTD coffee from convenience stores, with a cheaper price than the coffee sold in specialist coffee shops. Manufacturers are expected to follow this trend with more premium products with a high-end positioning.

number of coffee shops Overall, said the report, South Korea is currently the world’s 11th largest coffee market. At the end of 2011 there were over 12,300 coffee shops in Korea – up a staggering 54 per cent from just over 8,000 in 2010. Sales jumped 59.7 per cent from US$1.4 billion (1.55 trillion Korean Won) to US$2.2 billion (2.48 trillion Korean Won) in the same one-year period. A major industry source expects the Korean coffee market to grow to about US$10 billion in due course.

Seoul, the capital, is said to boast the highest concentration of coffee shops in any city in the world.


Duties on unroasted coffee are expected to be removed immediately upon implementation of the Korea-US agreement, and duties on roasted coffee and instant coffee will be phased-out in five annual stages.  C&CI
