Hydrant Design Makes a Splash

Cast Component: Spartan hydrant. Material: Ductile iron. Process: Vertical green sand.

Application: Fire hydrant.

Casting Supplier: Waupaca Foundry, Tell City, Ind. Customer: Sigelock Systems, LLC, New York

• T e clam-shaped 140-lb. cast hydrant body houses the assembly for an innovative fi re hydrant designed by a veteran New York City fi refi ghter.

• T e customer expected to sell 10,000 hydrants in the fi rst two years, with the potential for much more, so it wanted a domestic supplier with the capacity to produce 500 units per day.

• The casting supplier worked with Sigelock to find ways to reduce cost in the design. This included reducing the number of cores needed from five to two and trimming wall thicknesses across the entire hydrant body.
